FINAL BLOG

The Question of the Day is....

Where do I see myself as a writer in the future?

The Answer to that question is....

I dont enjoy writing very much but I believe that I am still pretty good at it. I though about writing children's books and I have been told that I should write a few but I dont know if I will. I did find myself enjoying writing the poems and I do see myself writing more poems in the future. I may even take a stab at writing songs.

Post Secret

Frank,

My father, who I was very close to, passed away when I was 21 very suddenly and unexpectedly. 2 years later I met the man of my dreams and could not imagine getting married without my dad there.

To this day, whenever anyone asks me who walked me down the aisle the true and honest answer is: "My dad did".

I though this was a touching Post Secret. Many women can relate to this and it is sad when a woman does not have her father there to walk her down the aisle. I enjoyed see her creative way to show how she did have her father there to walk her down the aisle...he was literally there every step of the way.

Killing Yourself to Live....Response

What are the strengths of the text?
I believe the strength of the text is in how well Chuck Klosterman knew music and his ability to use facts about music to write 235 pages about 18 days of his life.

What areas do you see for improvement? Chucks writing was very scattered and difficult for me to read. I do believe that my lack familiarity with the music contibuted to that difficulty. So I am not sure if he needed to improve in that or if I just needed to read a book written like this about something I could relate to.

What is your overall impression?
I hated every minute of this book. It Bored me. which is probably why I didnt finish it.

Would you recommend this book? Why/why not? yes I would recommend it. If I ever met someone who was a fascinated and obsessed about thar genre of music as he Kloserman was, I would suggest this book to a rock lover. They would understand the book much better than I did and would probably get more of a feeling of accomplishment when they saw a name that they were familiar with and could trigger memories of thier own .

This is a Great Book..For Someone...Just Not Me

Monsters!!!!

Ummm Wow...a monster that I want to blog about?

I guess I would have to choose stitch from the Animated Movie "Lilo and Stitch". I really enjoy cartoons and kids movies. They are fun and funny and stitch is a very funny character. He tries very hard to me a nice little alien monster but often gets caught up my his natural tendencies to act like the true monster that he is. tearing up things and shooting his little lazer gun. In the end he ends up being a sweet and kind pet that loves his family and outs them first. I have seen this several times I would share this with my children in the future.

Heartless by LaToya Williams

Heartless
I’m not giving you my heart again
Last time you showed no care
You tore it in to pieces
So I just left it there
No need for me to mend it
For another man to break
It’s you, you are the reason
For every man I hate

What was the inspiration for the poem?
I have been a party to heartbreak and also a witness to it. It is painful. Some people choose to never pick up the peices to that broken part of them and become bitter and "heartless" towards others.

What challenges did you face?
I didn't have any real challenges with the poems that I wrote other that choosing what to write about. My love for music and singing may have had an affect on that. Everything comes to me in song and sometimes in rhymes so I probably have lots more poetry stored up in me.

How did you overcome these challenges?
I thought of things that I have passion about and drew from the emotion so my own personal experiences and from that I was able to come up with a peice that I am completely satisfied with.

Nikki Grimes

Fake Tattoo
by Nikki Grimes
My butterfly sits
atop my wrist
as if it’s poised for flight.
My lovely tattoo
no longer new
will fade before the night.
Still, after it’s gone,
it will live on
inside my memory.
This jewel of the air—
beauty most rare—
that once was plain as me.

Poem- Fake Tattoo

Fake Tattoo
by Nikki Grimes

My butterfly sits
atop my wrist
as if it’s poised for flight.
My lovely tattoo
no longer new
will fade before the night.
Still, after it’s gone,
it will live on
inside my memory.
This jewel of the air—
beauty most rare—
that once was plain as me.

I am not much of a reader so I usually will choose something that is short. I enjoy working with children and this particular poem reminded me of how my Pre-K students come to school with frayed and worn out tattoos on their arms, legs or hands. They are so excited about thier body art and they always want to tell you about them and show them to you. They never want them to come off and they do all they can to avoid getting water on them for fear that they will wash away. It is all very innocent and funny the way they try so hard to hold on the little things that are meant to be temporary.

Updated Hansel and Gretel and the Poor Witch

Hansel, Gretel and the Poor Witch

Scavenging through her cupboards trying to scrape up a meal, the old lady said,
“I’m starved and I have not eaten in anything in days. If I don’t have a meal soon I am going to die.”
She was a petite and decrepit old woman with bloodshot eyes and thin grey hair. She moved slowly about the house that she had build of candies and treats and relied on crutches to stand. She was secretly a witch and had terrible vision but her sense of smell was intense. She had an undisclosed room in her house where she kept her spells. In this private space she also stored hundreds of glass jars that held the organs of the many children she had eaten in the past. She entered her sanctuary daily and each time she visited her true appearance was revealed. Immediately, her hunched back would straighten and her eyes turned piercing blue. Her hair would multiply into rich black strands of licorice and she would see herself as the tall and beautiful witch that she really was.
The witch had vowed to be kind and had refrained from eating children for many years. Because of this her true beauty was fading away and could only be seen in her sanctuary. The witch did not want to see how unattractive she had become so she removed all but one mirror in her home. The only mirror left was hidden in her sanctuary where she visited daily. The witch took pride in her home and did her best to maintain it but recently vandals had continuously been eating appetizing home. This was causing her heart to harden again and after several vandalisms she became outraged.
“I am sick of being kind. It’s not doing me any good. The next person that I catch snacking on my house will be eaten for sure.”
Early the following morning the witch was up as usual cleaning her house. Crack, nibble and chew. She heard someone outside her house. She bellowed from within,
“Nibble, nibble, gnaw who is nibbling at my house”
Two voices replied,
“The wind, the wind, the heaven born wind”
And they continued to munch on her beautiful home.
The witch was furious and rushed out know that she would finally catch the She was pleasantly surprised to see a young boy and girl there savoring each bite, but when they saw her they were afraid and dropped what was left in their hands. With a mischievous grin the witch said,
“Oh! Dear children, who has brought you here? Do come in, and stay with me. No harm shall happen to you. What are your names?”
As she took their hands the young boy said,
“My name is Hansel and this is my sister Gretel”
The scheming witch led them into the house and prepared a feast for the two of them. After devouring as much as they could, the witch set up to beds for them and they rested through the night.
The witch watched them as they slept and planned her evil deed.
“I haven’t eaten a child in years. This will be a grand feast. I must prepare and get everything I need”
She spent the night dancing in her sanctuary chanting,
“In the dark of night with the rising moon, Ill brew up this child and eat him soon”
The morning came and the evil witch snatched up the Hansel and carried him out the door. She drug hi out to the back of the house and locked him in a small wooden stable with a gated door. He shrieked with fear to no avail because they were so deep in the wood that no one would hear him. The witch shuffled quickly back to the house and shook Gretel saying,
“Wake up lazy and get some water. Go and cook some food for your brother, he is in the stable outside. When he is good and fat I will eat him”
Gretel sobbed, but was forced to do as the old lady commanded. The witch fed Hansel the best food to fatten him up while giving poor Gretel only crumbs to eat. Each Day the old witch went to Hansel and said,
“Hansel, stretch out your finger that I may feel if you will soon be fat”
Hansel was smart and knew she could barely see so each day he stuck out a bone for her to feel. The witch was astonished that after many weeks Hansel was still thin so she told his sister,
“Whether Hansel is fat of thin I will eat him tomorrow.”
That evening, Gretel prayed for God to help them.
Early the next morning the witch sent Gretel to fetch some water. While she was away the witch was heating the oven for baking. When Gretel returned the witch she said to her,
“Gretel climb inside to see if the oven in heated well enough to bake the bread”
All the while, she was planning to push Gretel in a let her bake so she could eat her too. Gretel said to the witch,
“I don’t know how to do it, how will I get in?
And the witch replied,
“Silly goose, the door is big enough. Just look, I can get in myself.”
The witch crept in and put her head in the oven. Then suddenly she felt a push from behind and the door to the oven slammed and locked. The poor witch shrieked and wailed as her body burned. She died and Hansel and Gretel ran away.

Dale Chihuly Blown Glass Art...Beautiful

I fell in love with Dale Chihuly's work when I took my husband to Grand rapids for a weekend getaway. We visited the Frederik Meijer Garden and Sculpture Tark and there was where I saw my first peice of Chihuly Glass Art. I am fascinated by what he does. It is the most beatiful thing I have ever seen. I set a goal to get a peice from his collection for my home in the future. Here are a few peices from his site.

Hansel and Gretel and the Poor Witch

Well Here is my First Draft for the story....

Hansel, Gretel and the Poor Witch

While looking for some dinner the old lady said,
“Oh Dear, I have not eaten in days. If I don’t have a meal soon I will surely perish.”
She was a decrepit old woman with bloodshot eyes and thin grey hair. Moving slowly about the house that she had build of candies and treats, she hunched over the crutched that helped her stand. 1st Day

Alright, its time for yet another long and tough semester. Being in this room is like old times all over again. I am looking forward to seeing what P.F. Potvin has instore this time around. Luckily I will only have one book to read this time.
